FRESH TALK: Carrie Mae Weems [@ National Museum of Women in the Arts] [D.C./USA]

Join us for an exciting conversation with artist and activist Carrie Mae Weems on how artists can inspire social change.

In this FRESH TALK program, artist and activist Carrie Mae Weems will discuss her belief in artists’ social responsibility and her recent activist work, including social reform efforts and public art projects in her hometown of Syracuse, N.Y.

During the second half of the talk, Weems will be joined by Robert Raben, president and founder of the Washington, D.C.-based lobbying and consulting firm The Raben Group, which produces the annual March on Washington Film Festival. The festival, founded in 2013 to honor the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, uses the power of film, music and the arts to share the important stories of the events and heroes of the Civil Rights Era and inspire renewed passion for activism.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Over the past 30 years, Weems has developed a complex body of work that has employed photographs, text, fabric, audio, digital images, installation and video to investigate family relationships, cultural identity, class, political systems and the consequences of power. Her work has been exhibited at the at the Guggenheim Museum, Art Institute of Chicago, Whitney Museum of American Art, Museum of Modern Art, and Bilbao Fine Arts Museum, to name a few. She had her first major museum exhibition at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in 1993.
