SIGNAL is proud to present Dog Chases Rabbit, an exhibition of new and recent works by
Andrew Ross.
Andrew Ross’s series of sculptures and wall works contain fragments from wide-ranging
contexts: statues that could have been transplanted from remote locations, symbols that
could serve as corporate logos, or figurines that might be found at a toy store. Using clay,
wood, paint, and found materials, he renders abstracted representations of the human
body and the objects and images that characterize everyday spaces.
“Dog chases rabbit” refers to an analogy that the artist stumbled upon, explaining the
evolution of cultural attitudes through metaphor. There was a time when people were
likely to describe the relationship between a dog and a rabbit in practical terms, one is
prey to the other. Owing in part to more widespread familiarity with scientific concepts,
we’d now likely point to their shared taxonomy, both being furry mammals. Yet the former
understanding may be more useful at times, when it is advantageous to selectively ignore
nuance in favor of the more pressing need to survive. This reflects a condition in which
blindness lends insight, as it sometimes does for the artist.
In preparation for this exhibition Ross developed his own recipe for plasticine clay, a material
he regularly uses in mold-making processes. He gleaned information on its composition
from online sculpture forums and a common sense, experience-based understanding of
the store-bought version. The unique properties of the material and the repeated task
of cooking it in batches speaks through much of this new work, in parallel with content
relating to daily rituals of work and consumption.
Andrew Ross (b. 1989, Miami, FL) is based in Brooklyn, New York. Ross received his BFA from Cooper Union, where he was awarded the Jacques and Natasha Gelman Trust Award for exceptional ability in the field of sculpture (2011). He has been a resident at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture (2011), Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s Swing Space (2013) and Atelier Mondial in Riehen, Switzerland (2014). He is a current participant of Open Sessions at The Drawing Center, in the inaugural group of the program. His work has been exhibited internationally, including at The Drawing Center, NY; A+A Gallery, Venice Italy; and Basement, Basel, Switzerland. “Dog Chases
Rabbit” is his first solo exhibition in NYC.
